Editing Techniques

Watch one of the Adobe Premiere Elements 13 video tutorials on a relevant topics, and make notes on how to use this editing software.  Summarise your findings and post in on the Production Skills page of your blog.  Video tutorials can be found when you open Adobe Premiere Elements video editor, and select the Guided options. A2 Media Summer Task - Production Concept

Over the Summer you need to begin developing ideas for your main task production.  In order to do this you should first come up with a range of potential ideas for your product.

For the Music Video Brief you should consider which song you may use for your main task production and begin to develop possible ideas for the content of the music video.

For the Film Trailer Brief you should consider possible storylines for your film, and key events which you may use in your trailer.

For both briefs you should begin to develop ideas for possible settings, use of props, costume, lighting, make up, camerawork, and sound.

Your work should include some detailed written explanation of your ideas, and visual and/or video/audio elements.

This work should be completed and uploaded to the Planning page of your blog by the beginning of term in September (Thursday 4th of September).

Remember all the Research tasks listed in the post below must also be completed.

Homework - Institution Research

Identify a media institution which would produce and distribute your product (film studio, record label).  Complete research into your chosen institution.  You should find out about the ownership of the company - is it a subsidiary?  If so who is the parent company?  What other subsidiaries are owned by the parent company?  What similar products has the institution produced?

Content Analysis

Choose a relevant film trailer or music video and fill in the grid below identifying:

• the number of different shots used
• the shot types used
• the shot length in seconds
• the number of different scenes
• the content and purpose of the shot

After you have filled in the grid upload it to your blog on the Genre Research page.  You should then reflect on what you have found out about the pace of editing, number of shots and scenes, and what function shots have in your chosen product.

Homework - Audience Profile

Create an audience profile about the target audience for your product.  You should include information about demographics (age, gender) and psychographics (lifestyle, interests). 

Try to make this as visual as possible, and make creative use of technology to present your work.

Summarise the key findings of your research into similar products (trailers, music videos, ancillary products).  Explain what you have found out about conventions of form and genre, and the use of technical elements.

Analyse a promotional package for a similar product to your coursework production.

Film Trailer Brief - analyse a film trailer, poster, and other promotional materials (e.g. magazine covers, websites, etc.).

Music Video Brief - analyse a music video, album cover, and other promotional materials (e.g. adverts, merchandise, websites).

How do the products create brand identity?  How are fonts, colour, language, mise-en-scene, images used?  How do the different products link together?  How do they appeal to the target audience?

Introduction to the Advanced Portfolio

Evaluate one music video and one film trailer from the list below using the assessment criteria.  What have students done well?  How could they have improved their production work?

As you evaluate the production work consider which brief you think your would find most interesting, and would be able to complete a successful product in relation to.

Summarise your ideas about the strengths and weaknesses of the students' work into a table.

Once you have completed that, using one of the products compare that to a professional music video or trailer.  In what ways are they similar?  How could the student's work be more professional?
